How it works

The math is plain.
The reading is the work.

I
Reduce each piece of the date
Month, day, and year are each summed and reduced to a single digit — unless they land on 11, 22, or 33.
II
Add the three reductions
Sum the three results. This number is the bridge between your birth date and your chart.
III
Reduce a final time
Reduce again to a single digit. The exception: if the sum is a master number, leave it alone. That is your Life Path.
Worked example · October 22, 1980
10 → 1+0 = 1 + 22 stays 22 + 1980 → 1+9+8+0 = 18 → 1+8 = 9 = 32 → 3+2 = 5

A Life Path 5 — the Adventurer. Restlessness, change, and freedom are the lifetime's theme.

Common questions

Things people ask

Is numerology real?
That depends what you mean by 'real'. The numbers and calculation methods are real and consistent, and anyone calculating your Life Path Number using the same system will get the same result. Whether the meanings attached to those numbers reflect something genuine about you is something you'll have to judge for yourself. Most people who engage with it seriously say it describes them more accurately than they expected.
What's the most important number in numerology?
Your Life Path Number. It comes entirely from your birth date, and it's the anchor for everything else in the chart, the equivalent of a sun sign in astrology. Your Expression Number, Soul Urge Number, and Personal Year cycles all add texture. But the Life Path Number is what you start with, and for most people, it's the one that lands hardest.
Why do different sites give me different numbers?
Different systems. Most sites (including this one) use Pythagorean numerology, A=1, B=2, C=3, and so on. Some use the older Chaldean system, which assigns different values to letters. Your Life Path Number comes only from your birth date, so it should match everywhere. Name-based numbers like your Expression Number are where the systems diverge.
What's the difference between the guides here and a reading at Numerologist.com?
The guides here teach you the system, what the numbers mean, how they're calculated, what they say about personality and relationships. Numerologist.com applies the system to you specifically. You give it your name and birthdate; it gives you a personalized video walking through your actual numbers. The guides are learning the language. The reading is getting a letter written in it, addressed to you.
